Former Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez answers questions over Napoli future

RAFAEL BENITEZ has once again avoided committing to Napoli for the long term, fuelling speculation he could return to Liverpool next summer.

Rafael Benitez says he will make a decision on his future at the end of the season

Benitez has been in charge of the Naples club for just over 18 months and is expected to see them safely to Champions League qualification next season.

But the former Reds boss - who famously won the Champions League with Liverpool in 2005 - kept his distance when questions were asked over his long-term future at Napoli.

He told Canal Plus: “I’ll speak about my future before the end of the season.

“For now I want to stay focused on the present, and the games we have coming up. I have a good relationship with the players and the club, there’s still time to discuss this issue.

“When I leave Napoli, whether that’s in a year or five years, I want to the team to be more mature, especially at European level, with a squad to face every challenge.”

The 54-year-old is seen as a strong favourite to replace Brendan Rodgers if the current Anfield boss is sacked at the end of this season for failing to finish in the Premier League top four.

Dortmund's Jurgen Klopp and Frank De Boer of Ajax are also in the leading pack to take the Merseyside post.

Benitez has already brushed off interest from PSG over his availability but club bosses have conceded they will struggle to keep their man past the summer.

Sporting director Riccardo Bigon said earlier this month: "Benitez? We’ve gotten to know a wonderful person, and a great professional, both he and his staff.

"In two or three months we’ll have a clear picture of the future, but we must focus on the near future, the next five months which we’ll go into together with Benitez."
