Mark Sampson's side took on the USA at Stadiummk

Alex Morgan headed in from Lauren Holiday’s delivery after 25 minutes to break England’s resolve.

The Lionesses were, however, denied a good goal in the second half as Jodie Taylor finished beyond Ashlyn Harris after the keeper had tipped Fran Kirby’s shot onto the bar only to be wrongly ruled offside.

USA – ranked second in the world – were without the likes of Hope Solo, Christie Rampone and Megan Rapinoe but were still too strong for Mark Sampson’s side.

They controlled the game with England restricted mainly to speculative efforts on the break.

Kirby – on her first start for the Lionesses – was bright going forward but the lack of height in defence cost England again.
