QPR breathe sigh of relief after Southampton defeat as Charlie Austin injury not serious

CHARLIE AUSTIN last night learned he had not broken his foot and will miss only one game – and struggling QPR breathed a huge sigh of relief.

But the West London club were still left reeling after this desperate home defeat by Southampton, with the news that key defender Richard Dunne will be out for three months after damaging cruciate ligaments.

And fullback Nedum Onuoha will be absent for up to month after injuring a hamstring.

That news is a hammer blow for Rangers’ chance of avoiding relegation from the Premier League - they lie one place off the bottom of the table after falling to Sadio Mane’s injury time goal.

It was feared that 13 goal top scorer Austin had broken his right foot late in the game, and could be out for up to six weeks, which really could have spelled doom for Rangers, but scans yesterday showed he had suffered only bruising.

Austin Tweeted: “Scan done. Delighted to say I’ve NOT broken a bone in my foot! Hopefully back in a week or two!”

After tomorrow’s game at Sunderland, Rangers do not have another game for 11 days before they go to Hull on February 21, and he should be fit for that match.

Tim Sherwood is still hot favourite to take over as the club’s new manager after the departure of Harry Redknapp last week - but Rangers owner Tony Fernandes has still not yet met face to face with the former Tottenham boss.

This victory moved a consistent Saints into third and manager Ronald Koeman said: “Normally the big teams have the best players, but it would be good for a team out of that bracket to fight for a high position.”
