REVEALED: The true cost of Man Utd and Chelsea target Edinson Cavani

ROMA wanted to sign PSG striker Edinson Cavani this winter but could not afford his transfer fee and wages, sporting director Walter Sabatini has revealed.

The Seire A club considered a move for the Uruguayan ace but baulked at Paris' asking price, thought to be around £50million.

Both Chelsea and Manchester United were also interested in landing the 27-year-old, who is expected to leave PSG in the summer, during last month's transfer window.

But PSG held firm and it appears Roma are out of the running after Sabatini explained the transfer, including wages, would have totalled the club's entire revenue for a season - approximately £94million according to Forbes.

"We can't buy the players, Jim Pallotta wants to win the Scudetto, and if we don't do it this year then we'll do it next year, because this is Roma's target and Pallotta is doing some incredible work to always win it," Sabatini said.

"Having said that, let's not talk of why we did not sign [Paris Saint-Germain's Edinson] Cavani. He'd cost the same as the club's total revenue.

"We purchased [Seydou] Doumbia, who scores 0.9 goals per game. You always lamented Roma's sterility when finalising, and we intervened on that.

"What am I supposed to tell people? I'm buying a player that costs like a year's worth of operations.

"A few years from now it's not going to be like this because Roma will have many sources of revenue. Now things aren't like that, but Roma exists. One day they're going to tell you of all the work that the club is doing."
