Champions League experience helping Saints' Toby Alderweireld adapt to English football

TOBY ALDERWEIRELD is a juggernaut in English football's Mean Machine and the Southampton centre-back is proud to "show my qualities to the world".

Toby Alderweireld has made seven appearances for Saints this season

The Belgian, who played in last season's Champions League final for Atletico Madrid, has helped make Saints watertight since coming on loan from Spain last month.

Saints have the best defence in all four divisions, having conceded just five league goals and keeping as many clean sheets in their opening nine games while moving up to second - their highest position in 30 years.

They have conceded just two goals, had four clean sheets and won five in six since the 25-year-old defender's arrival.

Their latest victory - a 1-0 win over Stoke on Saturday - highlighted the importance of Saints' powerful backline a week after their frontline went on an eight-goal rampage against Sunderland.

Alderweireld was dominant alongside skipper Jose Fonte against the physical and aerial presence Stoke possessed in the shape of 6ft 7in Peter Crouch.

Alderweireld said: "It was difficult because there were a lot of expectations after Sunderland but we won it in a different way. Defensively we gave them nothing. Another win and clean sheet gives us a lot of confidence.

"Stoke had a lot of quality on the high balls. I'd never come up against an opponent like Crouch but we defended smart against him. If you want to attack the ball you're going to lose against him because he's too big. So you try to do it another way. It worked. They never really threatened.

"There's good relationship between Jose and myself. We talk, have experience. But the credit is to the whole team."

Expectations are rising at Southampton and we are going in a good way

Former Ajax defender Alderweireld revealed he came to Saints after becoming a bit-part player with Atletico.

He said "I wanted to play a lot more and show my qualities to the world. Expectations are rising at Southampton and we are going in a good way."

Manager Ronald Koeman is convinced Alderweireld's top-level experience has been vital in launching a genuine bid for a Champions League spot.

He said: "Toby has been a strong influence - he has settled so well that it looks as if he has played in English football for two years already.

"Meanest defence in England? I'm proud of that, we have worked hard on defensive organisation and clean sheets win games."

Southampton were the Unlikely Lads at the beginning of the campaign, having sold a clutch of stars such as Adam Lallana, Rickie Lambert, Calum Chambers and Luke Shaw.

But Koeman has invested wisely in replacements, including Dusan Tadic, Graziano Pelle and, of course, Alderweireld.

What the managers said - Saturday 25 October

Sadio Mane popped up with the 33rd-minute winner to leave Stoke without a win at Southampton since 1980.

But midfielder Charlie Adam insists his side can bounce back with the help of controversial winger Victor Moses.

Moses was at the centre of a 'cheat' storm against Swansea last week when he was accused of diving. But Adam said: "Was Victor affected by diving talk? He could have gone down in the first half against Southampton. Every time Victor gets the ball and he's running, everyone is going to try to scrutinise it.

"Last week's incident is done and dusted. Let's move on. Victor is a very good player and we need to bounce back from this defeat."
