The defender, who plays for Skrill Premier side Chester, was approached via Twitter by Gibraltar's manager Allen Bula, asking to talk "privately" about the possibility.

Higginbotham, who confirmed yesterday that Bula is his uncle, has made more than 300 appearances for Stoke, Manchester United, Derby and Southampton – and it is this experience which Bula no doubt believes would prove invaluable as they try to qualify for Euro 2016.

It was confirmed in May that UEFA had rubberstamped Gibraltar's application to become their 54th member.

The 34–year–old Higginbotham is interested in and qualifies because his mother is Spanish.

He is now set to hold talks with Bula in the next few days.
