Snubbed Rio Ferdinand to cheer England
RIO FERDINAND has promised to get behind England at Euro 2012 despite his controversial absence from the squad.
Ferdinand’s camp reacted furiously to the former England captain again being overlooked after the withdrawal of defender Gary Cahill with a fractured jaw following Saturday’s Wembley win against Belgium.
Rather than call Ferdinand, 33, into the squad, England manager Roy Hodgson selected Liverpool defender Martin Kelly, prompting Jamie Moralee, Ferdinand’s long-time friend and business partner, to accuse the new boss of “a total lack of respect”.
Just so we don’t get it twisted...I’ll be in a pub somewhere supporting England this summer
Ferdinand, however, last night insisted he would be fully supportive of the team in Ukraine and Poland.
He said on Twitter: “Just so we don’t get it twisted...I’ll be in a pub somewhere supporting England this summer.
Love the lads!” Hodgson, who said Ferdinand’s omission was for “footballing reasons”, will arrive with his squad at their Krakow base tomorrow.
