Harry Redknapp’s tribute to Ralph Coates
FORMER England and Tottenham midfielder Ralph Coates died yesterday, aged 64, following a stroke.
He was capped four times by England and scored the winning goal for Spurs in their 1973 League Cup final victory over Norwich.
Spurs manager Harry Redknapp led the tributes for Coates, who started his career at Burnley and also played for Leyton Orient. “Ralph was just a great guy, one of life’s nice fellas. He is still loved here,” said Redknapp.
Former Burnley captain Martin Dobson, who played alongside Coates for five years, said: “He was immensely popular with the fans and in the dressing room and he always had a smile on his face.”
“He was a smashing guy and it’s a sad loss.”
