Tottenham chief Daniel Levy has been left in an awkward situation as he is refusing to budge on Sporting Lisbon’s Pedro Porro demands. Spurs boss Antonio Conte is reportedly desperate to sign the right wing-back, but Sporting won’t let him leave unless his £40million release clause is met.

According to the Portuguese publication Record, Tottenham have already been in touch with Sporting to talk about signing Porro. But they were told the 23-year-old isn’t leaving for less than it says he can in his contract.

Spurs consider the fee to be too high but will still insist on getting the deal done at a lower price before the end of the transfer window. Conte’s wish is to have Porro in his squad but Sporting don’t want to lose him midway through the season. And the Portuguese giants are not expected to negotiate with interested parties.

Sporting are in a healthy financial situation and have no need to sell Porro at the moment. So Spurs could end up stumping up the whole £40m if they do want to land their man.

Porro joined Sporting from Manchester City in August 2020. The defender initially moved to Portugal on loan but put pen-to-paper on a permanent deal last summer. Porro has bagged two goals and 10 assists in 21 games this season and played in five of his team’s Champions League matches as Sporting finished third in their group.

The player, who has won one cap for Spain, has played a total of 93 games for Sporting, racking up a staggering 11 goals and 19 assists in the process.

Tottenham were back in Premier League action on Wednesday night following their 2-0 defeat at the hands of Aston Villa on New Year’s Day. The Lilywhites made amends at Selhurst Park as they ran out 4-0 victors courtesy of a Harry Kane brace and goals from Matt Doherty and Son Heung-min.

And after the match, Conte said: “It’s always important to get three points and have this type of win. This brings confidence. The game against Aston Villa, after a good first half, we conceded the goal and our confidence dropped a lot and to recover in two or three days after a defeat at home where we are expected to win, and to go again, was not easy. The response was really good. My players showed great character, great personality.

“We know we face Arsenal and Man City, the two title contenders for this Premier League. To arrive with a good win is really important. I hope to recover players who are injured. We are talking about important players. I hope in these 10 days to have all the players available: Richarlison, [Dejan] Kulu[sevski], [Rodrigo] Bentancur.”
