Edwin van der Sar remembers his time at Man United
Manchester United have, according to reports in the Netherlands, made contact with Edwin van der Sar over potentially becoming the club’s sporting director. The 51-year-old previously spent six successful years at Old Trafford, winning four Premier League titles along the way. Now, a sensational return to his old team may be on the cards…
Van der Sar joined United in the summer transfer window of 2006 and instantly became the club’s first-choice goalkeeper, ahead of Tim Howard.
He’d go on to become the stuff of legend at Old Trafford, helping them win four league titles as well as the Champions League in 2008.
Van der Sar hung up his boots in 2011 and, since then, has predominantly worked at Ajax - helping the Dutch giants remain competitive despite often selling their best players.
According to Voetbal Primeur, United have reportedly reached out to the 51-year-old about potentially becoming their sporting director.
Though United have John Murtough working in a similar role behind the scenes, there’s a sense they require somebody else to ease his workload.
And Van der Sar has previously admitted he’d be open to working with United - something that bodes well amid claims they’re looking to bring him in.

“I am a CEO more for the football side of things. Ajax is very structured. Manchester United is so different and you have to work with several owners there too.
“Does that suit you or do you like your life in Noordwijk and Amsterdam enough? That is the question.
“I couldn’t do this job at a club I don’t like.
“I am extremely happy with what we have been able to achieve at Ajax.
“Ten years ago we had the ambition to join Europe’s elite and we have lived up to those words. We did that through hard work and without a rich sugar daddy or government funding to help us.”

Right now, United are yet to address talk of Van der Sar returning to Old Trafford.
But it would certainly be an exciting prospect given how well he worked alongside Ten Hag when the 52-year-old was Ajax manager.
Speaking in September, Van der Sar praised Ten Hag for the work he did over in Amsterdam - where the club won three Eredivisie titles, the Dutch Cup and Dutch Super Cup.
The former United star said: "I think we needed to replace the manager, Erik ten Hag did a massive job and a well deserved transfer to Man United.
"I think in total we lost 14 players - not all first-team players - but six or seven starters."
