Levein slaps booze ban on Scotlands stars

SCOTLAND boss Craig Levein has slapped a booze ban on his international players.

No-nonsense Levein reckons bevvy for professional athletes during Scotland get-togethers as well as before and after matches is a no-no.

And after last season’s Cameron House shame which led to bans for Barry Ferguson and Allan McGregor, Levein has told his players he will not tolerate any more scandals.

Levein addressed his players after dinner on Sunday night at the team’s new base at the Mar Hall Hotel – and his hardline stance was unanimously supported by the squad.

Assistant boss Peter Houston revealed: “They’re his rules and that’s whether he’s a club manager or Scotland manager.

“After this game we’ll be dispersing anyway but if we’ve got a ten day gathering with two games there won’t be any drink.

“He’s a great believer that we’re here to work and if we do well we’ll be rewarded and then you can have a drink. The players understand that. Craig has a reputation for being firm but very fair and there wasn’t a big deal made of it.

“He did that with Hearts, Leicester and Dundee United and that would have been said whether or not the incidents had happened in the past.’’

Striker James McFadden has backed the new gaffer’s rules on drinking saying : “ The manager has his ways of doing things and the players will stick to that. We’re only together for a short period of time so I don’t think anyone has a problem with not being able to have a drink.

“The manager has to come in and put his stamp on things and the players are happy with that.”
