Capello's World Cup boost for Beckham
DAVID Beckham is a step nearer to realising his dream of playing in a fourth World Cup after Fabio Capello said he will take him to South Africa – providing he is fit.
England coach Capello backed midfielder Beckham’s claims, which will leave Shaun Wright-Phillips and James Milner sweating on their places in his final 23-man squad for next summer’s finals.
Beckham, 34, flew into Italy yesterday to begin a second loan stint with AC Milan as he looks to keep in shape following the end of LA Galaxy’s season.
“Of course, if he plays well and is fit I will include him in my squad,” said Capello. “I don’t look at age, I pay attention to quality and David has a lot. He’s serious, he’s a great professional and he’s crazy about the World Cup.”
Beckham has won 115 caps for his country – a record for an outfield player – although he has been restricted to cameo roles in England’s most recent matches.
Aaron Lennon has emerged as Capello’s preferred right-sided option, while Theo Walcott remains highly rated by him, despite a litany of injury problems that have curtailed his international appearances.
Beckham’s experience appeals to Capello, however, and his inclusion in the final squad would reduce the chances of Wright-Phillips making the cut.
Meanwhile, Beckham is hoping to make his reappearance for AC Milan in their home match against Genoa on January 6.
