Gabriel Magalhaes assisted by Nicolas Pepe for Lille in 2019
Arsenal star Nicolas Pepe told Gabriel Magalhaes that the Gunners needed new defenders before the Brazilian joined the club in the summer. Arsenal signed Gabriel for an initial £22million from Ligue 1 side Lille. Pepe also joined the Gunners from Lille in 2019, so knows Gabriel from their time together at the French club.
Gabriel has had an impressive start to his Arsenal career and put in a fine display at the back in the 1-0 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford last Sunday.
Arsenal's defence has received plenty of criticism in recent seasons, dating back to Arsene Wenger's time in charge.
Pepe says he advised Gabriel to join Arsenal in the summer and that a new defender was needed at the club.
"Yes, I did speak to him quite a lot before he came here," Pepe told Sky Sports.

“I’m really pleased with the way our new players have settled so quickly,” Arteta wrote in Arsenal’s Official Matchday Programme ahead of Thursday's Europa League clash against Molde.
“They play with a lot of maturity and look like they’ve been here much longer than they have.
"Don’t forget, Thomas and Gabriel are completely new to this league.
"Honestly, I didn’t expect this level from them so soon because I know how tough this league is – you cannot compare it to any other league in the world.”
