Paul Merson reckons Chelsea need to strengthen in one area if their transfer ban is lifted in January.
Chelsea boss Frank Lampard will sign a striker in January if their transfer ban is lifted, Paul Merson claims.
The Blues’ youngsters have impressed under Lampard this season.
Following Chelsea’s 2-0 win against Crystal Palace on Saturday afternoon, the Blues find themselves second in the Premier League behind Liverpool.
Things are looking good for Chelsea, who are confident of getting their transfer ban overturned.
I think it will be a centre-forward
The court of arbitration for sport hears their appeal on November 20 and the Blues are confident their ban will be lifted.
And Merson reckons Lampard will sign a new striker if they’re allowed to sign players in January.
When asked where Chelsea will strengthen if their transfer ban is lifted, Merson said on Sky Sports: “Up front. A forward.
“I think it’s a long season for [Tammy] Abraham. He’s done great but to do that for 38 games when it’s his first season will take its toll.
N’Golo Kante and Willy Caballero take part in Chelsea training
“I don’t think [Olivier] Giroud will want to sit around as a sub, especially with the Euros coming up next year.
“So for me, I think it will be a centre-forward.”
Tammy Abraham has impressed under Lampard this season, with the striker netting 11 goals in all competitions for the Blues.
The 22-year-old is keeping former Arsenal ace Giroud on the bench, as well as Belgium international Michy Batshuayi.
However, Giroud has been tipped to quit Stamford Bridge to get regular game time elsewhere.
Inter Milan are eyeing the France international, who has started just one Premier League game this season.
Chelsea are back in action next Saturday as the Blues travel to Manchester City in the Premier League (5:30pm kick off).
