Tripper played the full 90 minutes as Tottenham were beaten by Liverpool in the Champions league final on Saturday night.
However, the Daily Mail say United have now been forced to change tact.
It is said Spurs are pricing the Red Devils out of a transfer, with Solskjaer reluctant to fork out the £30million Daniel Levy is demanding.
As a result, United are now switching focus to Crystal Palace powerhouse Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
However, he is likely to cost significantly more with Palace eager to get at least £45m to let the youngster go.
Wan-Bissaka also expressed a belief that he would still be at Selhurst Park next season, saying: “The situation just shows that my performances don’t go unnoticed.
“But I am with Crystal Palace at the moment.
“That is where my contract is and that is where I will be next season.
"I have got three years left on my contract. It says I am going to be there, so that is all I can focus on now.”
United need a new right-back this summer.
Club captain Antonio Valencia is departing after a decade of service, with Arsenal keen to snap him up.
Matteo Darmian will be shown the door with a return to Italy mooted.
And Ashley Young is showing signs of waning and must, therefore, be upgraded on.
