Manchester United NEED Toby Alderweireld says pundit
Manchester United were heavily linked with a move for Tottenham powerhouse Alderweireld a year ago but, ultimately, missed out.
Jose Mourinho was keen to lure the Belgium international to Old Trafford despite already having Eric Bailly, Victor Lindelof, Marcos Rojo, Phil Jones and Chris Smalling on the books.
Manchester United chief Ed Woodward refused to fork out, however, with Tottenham pricing them out of a transfer.
Fast-forward to now, however, and the Red Devils are eager to sign a new defender at the end of the season.

And, though United are yet to make contact with Tottenham, it seems to be just a matter of time before they land their man.
Meanwhile, former England international Danny Murphy believes Alderweireld would be a perfect signing for the Red Devils.
“I’ll be interested to see what impact Philippe Coutinho has [in Barcelona’s Champions League quarter-final against Manchester United],” he told the Daily Mail.
“Coutinho has been linked with a move to United because his transfer from Liverpool hasn’t worked out as well as expected.
“My view is United have more pressing priorities than the Brazilian, namely a midfield playmaker to finally replace Michael Carrick and a defensive leader in the mould of Virgil van Dijk – maybe Toby Alderweireld.”
