Wayne Rooney claims England legends are jealous of Gareth Southgate’s young stars
WAYNE ROONEY claimed last night that some former England stars are jealous of the current crop of youngsters.
Rooney, 33, made an emotional farewell appearance in the 3-0 win over the USA on Thursday night.
Now, as the Three Lions prepare to face Croatia tonight,he has revealed that he’s shocked that some other players from his generation of England players do not share the same passion and belief in Gareth Southgate’s young, vibrant squad.
Rooney said: “These players are the real deal. Someone said we had superstars, and yeah we did, but this side has superstars. I am seeing first hand that they are getting coached right. I’m excited.
“I’d love to be their captain. But there are some ex-players who I’ve spoken to who can’t come to terms with England doing well. It’s wrong.
“I’m a fan. I am proud to have played for England so many times. I’m happy with what I’ve contributed and I am looking forward now to watching this young team impress.”
Rooney has also revealed how he has given Jadon Sancho advice amid his rise to England senior team.
England’s all-time record goalscorer noticed that Borussia Dortmund star Sancho, 18, looked in need of some calming words in the dressing room before the 3-0 win over the USA.
And Rooney (training with Sancho above) delivered the right message, inspiring Sancho to an impressive display which capped a memorable night for the teenager.
Rooney said: “Obviously he’s a fantastic talent. I spoke to him before the game and he said he was nervous, which is normal.
“But I think the important thing he showed is that he wasn’t scared to make mistakes. It happens.
“He’s 18, so of course you’re going to make mistakes.
“But as I said to him, ‘Try and make an impact, have a few moments that people will remember when you come off the pitch’ and he certainly did that against the USA.”
