Jose Mourinho: Shock Arsene Wenger suggestion made about Man Utd boss
MANCHESTER UNITED should consider appointing Arsene Wenger as their next manager should they sack Jose Mourinho.
That is the opinion of Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson.
Mourinho had been under severe pressure ahead of the win over Newcastle at Old Trafford on Saturday, with one report suggesting he would be relieved of his duties regardless of the result.
However, United showed their fighting qualities as they came from 2-0 down to clinch a 3-2 victory.
Mourinho’s changes paid off as Juan Mata, Anthony Martial and Alexis Sanchez grabbed the goals to collect a much-needed three points.
Former Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane has been touted for the Red Devils role.
Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino is also believed to be in the reckoning should United part company with Mourinho.
But Merson thinks Wenger should be considered if United chiefs fire Mourinho.
“Seriously, that's not the worst idea in the world,” Merson said when asked about Wenger’s credentials to manage United.
It's not a bad shout. Sometimes you just need a fresh start
“You've got to look at what Wenger did.
"You don't have to go out and buy £70million to £80m players with some of the gems he's got over time.
“It's not a bad shout. Sometimes you just need a fresh start."
Mourinho, meanwhile, went on a bizarre rant after the match.
He said: “I have to be ready for all of this.
“I think a lot of wickedness and clear man-hunting in football is too much.
“It is my life. It is life I love and since I was kid I work for this."
