England team news: Predicted England line up vs Switzerland – Five out, Welbeck to start
ENGLAND are set to ring the changes ahead of their friendly clash with Switzerland tonight (8pm) as Gareth Southgate juggles a number of injury issues.
England are expected to field a much-changed team for their international friendly against Switzerland as they struggle with a minor injury crisis.
Three Lions manager Gareth Southgate could be without up to five first-team players for tonight’s match at the King Power Stadium.
Luke Shaw has been sent home from international duty following a nasty collision with Dani Carvajal during the 2-1 defeat to Spain on Saturday.
The Manchester United defender suffered concussion and was stretchered off the pitch at Wembley before undergoing X-Rays at the stadium.
Shaw has now returned to his club to continue his recovery and is unavailable for selection, putting Danny Rose in line for a start against Switzerland.
Dele Allí has also withdrawn from the squad after suffering a muscle strain in the UEFA Nations League opener, handing Ruben Loftus-Cheek a chance to impress in attacking midfield.
Marcus Rashford was another player who picked up a knock in Saturday’s defeat and is a doubt, while Adam Lallana suffered a groin injury in training before the Spain fixture and is no longer with the squad.
Raheem Sterling also missed out on international duty due to a back injury, although his absence is thought to be precautionary rather than serious.
So many injuries have opened the door for some of Southgate’s fringe players, while others were set to be given game time anyway.
Jack Butland is almost certain to come in for Jordan Pickford in goal while Trent Alexander-Arnold is a like-for-like swap on the right with Kieran Trippier making way.
Kyle Walker is expected to come in for Joe Gomez while James Tarkowski should displace Harry Maguire as England look to give their squad valuable experience.
Meanwhile, Harry Kane’s lack of sharpness in the past few weeks means Arsenal striker Danny Welbeck could get the nod in attack.
Speaking ahead of the match, Southgate said: "We've got players who are an important part of our squad, there's a lot of competition for places and close calls for who the first-choice players will be.
"A lot of the guys coming into the team (against Switzerland) have had zero minutes for their clubs. Ultimately the right thing is to give them game time, give them international matches, that's the reason we do it. It's important they all feel involved.
"Some of these guys, as a result of being with us in the summer, missed pre-season. They've missed being first choice in the first couple of weeks and understandably they (the clubs) have kept starting XIs.
"We're in a position now where it will help them at their clubs to get minutes with us. We're trying to help them develop.”
