Simon Jones aims for a final hurrah
SIMON JONES would be the first to admit his career has not gone according to script, unless the script was for a credibility-stretching episode of Casualty.
But the Welsh fast bowler is determined to dictate his own happy ending.
Jones will walk out for Glamorgan against Nottinghamshire in the YB40 final at Lord’s today having announced his first-class and List A retirement last week.
And if there is any justice, he will finish it a winner with his home county at the home of cricket.
Jones, 34, would be within his rights to be pessimistic having seen precious little good fortune dispensed his way since he first encountered serious injury back in 2002, famously rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament on the outfield in Brisbane.
His has been a god-given talent cruelly compromised by injury.
Jones is confident that his side can help him grab a last chance to shine. “Hopefully we can bring it home,” he said.
“I could have packed it in years ago, but I always had the attitude that unless my leg was falling off I would get back out there.”
Tickets for today’s final are available from the East Gate at Lord’s.
SURREY have been relegated to Division Two of the County Championship after losing to Warwickshire by six wickets.
Lancashire claimed the second division title by drawing with Gloucestershire.
