An guest admitted her “heart skipped a beat” upon hearing the true value of a necklace she had inherited.

During filming in Cleveland, the PBS series saw expert Victoria Bratberg presented with a stunning necklace which had recently been handed down to the show’s guest.

“This piece I just inherited from my mother-in-law who passed away earlier this year at 99”, she explained.

“She inherited the piece from her aunt and uncle, Bertha and Fred Fisher who, you may know, have Fisher Auto Body and that became part of GM (General Motors).

“Our guess is, but we don’t know, is that it could have come from New York or Detroit where they spent a lot of time but we do know that it’s a very special piece and I haven’t worn it except one time, because it’s a very fancy necklace.”

Admiring the “beautiful” piece, Bratberg stated that it was a pendant Tiffany necklace from the Edwardian period, dating back to 1910.

She commented: “This period was known for elegance, a very fashionable time for ladies and this is the quintessential piece of jewellery from that period.”

Studying the necklace further, the expert spoke of the “delicate” chain of collet-set, old European cut diamonds with alternating marquise shaped links which is approximately made up of seven carats of diamonds.

“Then you taper down to this beautiful old emerald cut stone and it weighs approximately 2.5 carats.

“This is a very, very clean stone and a very white stone, so you have a very high colour, high clarity stone.”

She continued: “And then you drop down to this beautiful pendant watch.

“The filigree work and the diamond setting is beautifully done and then you see this gorgeous engraving all around the border.

“If you turn it over, you have a watch by Tiffany which also can be detached.”

When asked if she had any idea of its value, the guest replied: “We have no idea. We’ve never had it appraised so the fact we’ve just inherited it, this hopefully will be a good surprise.”

Summarising, Bratberg said: “Well I will tell you that we are seeing less and less of this material in the marketplace.

“It’s very sought after and at auction, the estimate would be $40,000 to $60,000.”

The guest automatically laughed when she heard the figure: “That’s unbelievable and a surprise! I am so grateful, thank you for giving us this valuable information.”

Bratberg then added: “For insurance purposes, I would estimate the value at approximately $120,000.”

The guest was even more impressed, laughing once again: “Wow. That makes my heart skip a beat. Oh my gosh. Thank you. Unbelievable.”

Antiques Roadshow is available to watch on PBS.
