BBC to air emotional Steve Wright tribute as co-star steps in to present show

Earlier this week, it was confirmed BBC Radio 2 DJ Steve Wright had died at the age of 69 - and tributes poured in far and wide from former colleagues and fans.

The is set to air a set of special shows to pay a moving tribute to Steve Wright, who has died at the age of 69. Liza Tarbuck will step in to replace Steve as she hosts a special Sunday Love Songs show to honour the broadcasting legend.

Steve's first appearance on Top of the Pops more than four decades ago is also set to be rebroadcast. A BBC spokeswoman said: “We’ve been remembering Steve on air all week together with our presenters and listeners, and we’ll continue to celebrate his decades with the BBC this weekend.

“On BBC Four, audiences can catch his first ever Top Of The Pops from 1980, on BBC Sounds there’s a special collection and this weekend’s Pick Of The Pops and Sunday Love Songs will be dedicated to Steve, presented by Gary Davies and Liza Tarbuck.”

The DJ was discovered in his London home on Monday morning, with emergency services arriving shortly after 10am. A spokesperson of the Metropolitan Police confirmed that his death was "not expected", but no further details have been shared.

They said: "A man in his 60s was pronounced dead at the scene. His next of kin have been informed The death was unexpected but is not being treated as suspicious. A report will be prepared for the coroner."

The news of Steve's death was confirmed on Tuesday after his family released a heartfelt statement.

It read: "It is with deep sorrow and profound regret that we announce the passing of our beloved Steve Wright. In addition to his son, Tom, and daughter, Lucy, Steve leaves behind his brother Laurence and his father Richard.

"Also, much-loved close friends and colleagues, and millions of devoted radio listeners who had the good fortune and great pleasure of allowing Steve into their daily lives as one of the UK's most enduring and popular radio personalities."

Later in the year, the BBC will show something special about Steve's work.

On Friday (February 15), BBC Four will play four episodes of Top of the Pops that Steve hosted.

This weekend, Gary will be hosting a special Pick of the Pops show in memory of Steve.

The show will take listeners back to 1980 and 1996, marking the years when Steve joined BBC Radio 1 and BBC Radio 2.

A BBC Radio 2 spokesperson shared: "Steve was deeply loved by the Radio 2 family and listeners, and for almost three decades he hosted a raft of brilliant shows on the network enjoyed by millions.

"In addition to his past Saturday and Afternoon Shows, Steve's Sunday Love Songs has been on air since 1996, and most recently. Steve also hosted the legendary Pick of the Pops on Saturdays, alongside a variety of specials on Radio 2, and Steve Wright: The Best of the Guests, Steve Wright's Summer Nights, and Steve Wright's Love Songs Extra on BBC Sounds. We will miss him dearly."
