Good Omens season 2: Why Neil Gaiman won't return for another series
GOOD OMENS season 2 has not been confirmed by Amazon Prime, though showrunner Neil Gaiman has ruled out returning if the series is renewed. Here’s why Neil Gaiman won’t return for another season of Good Omens.
Good Omens: Neil Gaiman says 'it's the right time' for the show
Good Omens has been hit by a petition asking for its cancellation, but season two may not be happening anyway on Amazon Prime. Neil Gaiman, who was showrunner for Good Omens' first series on Amazon Prime, has said he will not return for a second season due to other commitments. Amazon may decide to go ahead on another serires of Good Omens without Neil Gaiman, but this is unlikely.
Why Neil Gaiman won’t return for another series of Good Omens
When asked by Express.co.uk at the world premiere of Good Omens if there would be another series, Gaiman said he would not be behind it.
He said: “So far, Good Omens has taken me four years, or five years since I promised Terry [Pratchett, co-writer of the Good Omens novel] I’d make it.
“In that five years I haven’t been writing novels,” he continued.
Gaiman’s last book, The Ocean at the End of the Lane, was released in 2013 .
Reflecting on his career, Gaiman added: “It’s time for me to go back and be a novelist.”
The American Gods and Coraline author also said he wanted to spend more time with his wife, singer-songwriter Amanda Palmer.
He said: “I have a wife who has not seen enough of me for the last few years and is looking forward to me being at home.”
Although multiple Gaiman books and comics have been adapted for the screen or are in the process of being created, the writer has only been showrunner on his adaptation of Good Omens.
American Gods, for example, has Bryan Fuller and Michael Green as its showrunners.
He did, however, write the American Gods season two premiere, House on the Rock.
Among Gaiman’s other screenwriting credits are the 2014 series Eternals and two episodes of Doctor Who during its Matt Smith era.
However, Gaiman’s statement that he wants to go back to writing books suggests that we might not get any more screenplays from him for the next year or two.
The author, however, has an overall deal with Amazon, suggesting that his days as a screenwriter are not fully over.
Three productions based on works by Gaiman are currently in the pipeline, though it is unknown whether Gaiman will have any part in adapting them.
These projects are adaptations of his book The Graveyard Book, his short story The Thing About Cassandra and his iconic comic book series Sandman.
He has, however, not announced what he will be working on when he goes back to being a novelist.
Good Omens is streaming on Amazon Prime now.
