Tobias Menzies revealed the royal is “more complex than you think” while taking on the role of Prince Philip.
The Game of Thrones and Outlander star will take over from Matt Smith in the next instalment of the Netflix drama hit.
Next series of The Crown will follow a different plot and show Prince Philip in a new way.
Tobias said: “I wasn’t someone who read about them or involved myself with them.
I’ve gone slightly crazy just listening to him and listening to him
“But I’ve been very intrigued by his life. He’s a pretty interesting bloke.
“He’s a complex person, with complex stories. I have a lot of regard for him.”
To take on the role in the best possible way, Tobias has tried to immerse himself into royal life through old videos and recordings.
He told Radio Times: “I just listened to him loads. It’s partly a technical thing.
“You want to sound and look like him, but move like him too.
“I’ve gone slightly crazy just listening to him and listening to him.”
The 44-year-old actor revealed he feels pressure to live up to previous seasons of the show due to its popularity.
Tobias has been on set for “seven months”, but wants fans to hang on for the upcoming series.
He laughed: “We’re just trying not to f**k it up. Because it’s an amazing show and we’re this new cast.
“It’s sort of exciting and a bit odd to take over from Matt who did such a brilliant job.
“Olivia’s been great to work with, it’s been a joy. It’s one of those challenges of filming that you’ve got to build those relationships pretty quick.
Netflix’s royal drama The Crown will return for a third series with a stellar cast including Helena Bonham Carter as Princess Margaret.
Olivia Colman will take over from Claire Foy to play Queen Elizabeth II as an older monarch further down the show’s timeline.
Season three will focus on the period between 1964 and 1976.
