Debbie's Madonna effect

HER iconic platinum blonde hair and punky wardrobe helped to make Debbie Harry a worldwide pin-up.

And now she reckons record label Warner Brothers may have borrowed the look to push an up-and-coming Madonna in the early Eighties.

The Blondie star, 62, explains: “I came right up against the Madonna thing. Maybe it’s my paranoia but she had a lot of my looks. If you look closely, sometimes there’s pictures of her and me that completely overlap.

“She [Madonna] was getting such a huge push from Warners, I was definitely on the B-list.

“It was a hard period for me. I don’t think anybody knew how to market me or what to do with me. I was like a fish out of water.”

Now it would seem the balance has shifted – the musical version of Desperately Seeking Susan, playing in the West End, does not feature Madge’s songs, despite Madonna starring in the original film  but is a vehicle for the music of Blondie and Debbie Harry.

Handbags at dawn, anyone?
