Even a trustworthy friend will spill the beans just hours after being sworn to secrecy, while one in 10 will blab within just 45 minutes of a private conversation.

Hot gossip includes work, friends’ troubles and love lives, research by coffee chain Esquires Coffee Houses UK found.

Managing director Peter Kirton said: “When it comes to gossiping hot spots, it seems the water cooler is no longer the place to be, with work desks, staff kitchens, pubs and coffee houses among the most popular choices for a chat.”

The study of 4,000 women revealed they were told around three secrets a week by their nearest and dearest but pass on at least one to a friend.

However, 50 per cent of women think that it would be acceptable to betray a friend’s trust if they confide in their partner. But gossip comes at a price – 12 per cent say they have fallen out with a friend for repeating a confidence.
