The bizarre Sexy Heels In The City module aims to teach poise and confidence to young women studying hairdressing and beauty.

Tutor Chyna Whyne claims the £150-a-head six-week course at South Thames College in London could also prevent future back pain.

Her lessons also offer advice on how girls should carry designer handbags.

But yesterday critics criticised the classes. Matthew Elliott, of the TaxPayers’ Alliance, said: “This is a silly gimmick. Training young people to get them back to work can be good value for money but this is clearly a case of frivolity.”

Former singer Ms Whyne, 45, said she launched the course after suffering lower back pain from her days wearing high heels on stage.

The pilates and posture expert said: “The earlier younger ladies learn how to walk in heels, the better it’s going to be in the long run – with business and social lives.”

Student Celina Mystery, 16, said: “Since I started the course I’ve felt more confident in my heels.”

A college spokeswoman said: “The course is a good chance for the girls to improve their posture and confidence in a fun and light class whilst learning how to avoid injuries.”
