Fernando Torres could be back for Europa League final

LIVERPOOL have not given up all hope that Fernando Torres could yet make a recovery from knee surgery for the Europa League final – providing they get there.

Striker Torres missed out on an emotional reunion with boyhood club Atletico Madrid last night after undergoing another operation on his knee at the weekend.

It is the second successive campaign in which he has been denied a return to the Vicente Calderon by injury and he opted not to attend the game but rather continue his rehabilitation in Barcelona.

Liverpool ruled out Torres for up to six weeks after he went under the knife, but team-mate Javier Mascherano has added intrigue to a possible quick-fire comeback.

“He’s not been here, but we know he will be with us, supporting us,” said Argentina captain Mascherano.

“If we get to the final, we still have hope that he can be there.” The final is in Hamburg on May 12 – just 24 days after Dr Ramon Cugat operated on Torres. It would represent a remarkable return for Torres, who has still to win a medal since arriving at Anfield in 2007 for £20million.

“We still have a very real possibility of winning a trophy for these great fans, and that is more than we achieved last season,” said Torres this week. We must not give up on the top-four spot either.

“We know how hard it looks, but if we concentrate on winning our games then that is all we can do, and see where we are at the end of the season. The fans have been great this season through the good and bad times, and to win something for them would be very special for the players.”

Torres is confident of spearheading Spain’s World Cup challenge.
