May to break free?

IN THE years since Freddie Mercury’s death, Queen guitarist Brian May has kept the band alive with a series of replacement singers. now the permed rocker has revealed he wants to break free.

PROBLEM Brian May PROBLEM: Brian May

The 62-year-old, together with drummer Roger Taylor, has continued to perform as Queen with guest vocalists such as Britney Spears, Beyoncé Knowles and Robbie Williams and a long-running collaboration with Free singer Paul Rodgers, which ended in May. However, as he told Day & night: “It’s not easy being Queen.”

Speaking at the Classic Rock Awards in London, May sighed: “I used to love working off Freddie’s voice. But now we have a singer problem and if Roger and I went  off on our own we wouldn’t get away from the Queen  label so it wouldn’t work.”

May, who admitted, “I almost didn’t come because I don’t get  out much these days,” spent the evening showing off his latest “instrument” to his chums Iggy Pop, Pete Townshend and Ronnie Wood – a stereoscope  for the 3D picture book he produced, A Village Lost And Found.

Ronnie, meanwhile, spent the night cosying up to his 20-year-old sweetheart Ekaterina Ivanova
