A HIGH-ranking North Korean military spy defected to South Korea, officials in Seoul have revealed.
A senior member of the North Korean military has fled to the South
The incident involving a colonel is one of few examples of a senior-level military member fleeing from North to South.
It was announced just three days after 13 North Koreans fled the country in the largest group defection since despot Kim Jong-un came to power in 2011.
Pyongyang claims South Korea encourages citizens to defect
They were all working at the same restaurant outside of North Korea before they defected to the South.
The restaurant was reportedly located in the eastern Chinese city of Ningbo.
Hwang Jang-yop was the most famous North Korea defector
Ministers from both the North and South refused to give motive for the colonel’s defection.
He worked for a branch of the North Korea military called the General Reconnaissance Bureau.
Officials in South Korean capital Seoul revealed that the colonel had fled
The Bureau is thought to be responsible for two attacks that 50 South Koreans in 2010.
Despite some low-level soldiers deserted the North for the South, it is extremely rare for someone as high-ranking a s colonel to do so.
The most high-ranking defection ever came in 1997 when Hwang Jang-yop, a senior official in the ruling Workers’ party, fled to the South.
Almost 30,000 North Koreans have defected to South Korea since the end of the Korean War in 1953.
