Residents in Brussels have taken to social media in order to offer lifts and even places to stay to anyone in need following the bombings today.
Pray for Belgium, Pray for Brussels and Je Suis Bruxelles were among the most popular phrases used to show solidarity on Twitter around the world.
Le Monde shared an poignant image that linked the deadly Paris attacks in November to the bombings which killed 34 people in Brussels today.
The French newspaper's cartoonist Plantu drew the Le Monde image after having created a cartoon to mark the Charlie Hebdo attacks last year.
