Police said the victim was expected to recover from the attack

The victim was reportedly lured to a stranger's house after responding to an advert for baby clothes on the Craiglist classifieds website.

When the 26-year-old arrived at the property, police believe she was stabbed in the stomach before the attacker tore the unborn baby from her womb.

“Officers arrived on scene and could hear a female calling for help inside the home,” police said.

“Officers entered the home and located a female who had been beaten and stabbed in the stomach.”

Officials say a 34-year-old suspect later arrived at a local hospital in Colorado, US, carrying the deceased baby.

She is said to have claimed the baby was her own, telling doctors she had suffered a miscarriage.

Reports said she was arrested on suspicion of attempted first-degree murder, first-degree assault and child abuse knowingly and recklessly resulting in death.

The attacker’s husband drove her to hospital with the baby, but he is not being treated as a suspect in the case, police said.

The victim was taken to hospital and is expected to survive after undergoing surgery.

“This is a tragic case for a mother right now,” Jeff Satur, the investigating officer, said.

Police believe the attacker may be mentally ill, but officials are yet to reveal the name of the victim or the suspect.

District Attorney Stan Garnett said it was unclear which charges would be brought against the suspect.

"The issues involving an unborn child are complicated under Colorado law," he said.

"In most circumstances, if a child was not actually born alive, then homicide charges are not possible.”
