Twitter reacted furiously after Michelle Obama did not wear a head scarf in Saudi Arabia

President Barack Obama's wife defied the Muslim kingdom's strict dress code for women as she stepped off Air Force One without the head garment.

Saudi women are forbidden from appearing in public without their heads covered and most wear niqabs.

More than 1,500 posts were sent on Twitter using a hashtag which roughly translated to #MichelleObamaimodesty.

Some users questioned why the First Lady had worn a head scarf on trips to Indonesia but not to Saudi Arabia.

Despite the uproar foreign women are not required to cover their heads when they visit Saudi Arabia unlike its female residents.

Michelle Obama sparked outrage on Twitter when she did not wear a head scarf on a visit to Saudi Arabia

Even though Mrs Obama did not wear a head scarf the 51-year-old did dress conservatively wearing a loosely cut outfit.

She wore baggy black trousers and a colourful top which had long sleeves that covered her forearms.

Mrs Obama opted against the head scarf as she accompanied her husband today to pay respect to Saudi's King Abdullah who died last week.

Some members of an all-male Saudi delegation who greeted the President and First Lady shook Mrs Obama's hand while others nodded as they passed her.

While her decision against wearing a head scarf caused anger on social media in Saudi Arabia some Twitter users said they sympathised with hr.

A number of tweeters defended the First Lady and said as it was a short and impromptu visit it was understandable she did not wear the head garment.
