Jade Fox was enjoying a thrill-filled gap year in Australia when she cracked her head in a deadly car accident.

The 22-year-old Briton was reportedly not wearing her seat-belt when the four-wheel drive flipped when overtaking in a tourist convoy.

The young traveller had been touring Australia for the past six months when she died in the overturned car on Fraser Island in Queensland, on Friday.

Fraser Island resident and first aid respondent David Anderson said he tried to resuscitate Ms Fox, but it was quickly apparent that she had died.

He explained: "Two companions of the girl who died were visibly upset.

"They had six months to go on their Australian trip and they were saying they wanted to go home.

"They were just too upset to go on anymore."

Two other female tourists, from Germany and aged in their 20s, were rushed to Hervey Bay Hospital by the helicopter.

Both were treated for head and spine injures and now remain in a stable condition.

Five other passengers were taken to hospital and treated for non-life threatening injured.

All those injured in the accident were travelling in one of several four-wheel drives following one another on a guided tour.

Young Jade Fox, from Maidstone, in Kent, was the only fatality.

Hours before her death, the young backpacker expressed her excitement over her upcoming trip on Facebook.

She wrote: "Up early doors to travel Fraser Island for three days"

Friends flocked to pay tribute to the backpacker on social media sites.

Bryony Macleod tweeted, "RIP Jade, you'll be missed by all who had the pleasure to know you."

Steven Maverick Sims added: “RIP Jade Fox. Happiest go lucky smiling girl I knew from my 3 months back in Brados. Unbelievable still now that your gone!”

Fellow travellers reportedly claimed the backpacker driving the overturned vehicle was “young and inexperienced” with four-wheel-driving.

Convoys of four or more cars driven by backpackers have to follow a lead car operated by an experienced tour guide, under local regulations.
