Hundreds of migrants bound for Britain barricade themselves in new Calais squat

HUNDREDS of migrants determined to start a new life in Britain have barricaded themselves inside a new squat in the major ferry port of Calais.

Last week officers rounded up hundreds of those sleeping rough in the port town, before taking them to detention centres.

It was claimed that they would then be deported out of the country but most were released.

Charity workers confirmed many were heading back to the port town minus their tents and blankets, which were seized by police during the raids.

But it now appears that over the weekend, a group of migrants has moved into a disused factory at Impasse des Salines, about a mile from the busy cross-Channel ferry terminal.

A spokesman for Calais Migrant Solidarity

A spokesman for Calais Migrant Solidarity said: "Since (Saturday afternoon, July 12) there is a new squat in Calais for migrants facing harassment and police violence; it is a war here, in the streets.

"Ten days after the police raid 300 people - migrants and supporters - moved into a disused factory.

"The entry into these new premises occurred at the end of the demonstration called by the associations on Saturday afternoon, despite the new 'anti-vagrant' and 'anti-gatherings' decrees issued by the municipality last week.

"This decree is aimed at migrants in Calais and against events organised in their support.

"As from 10 July homeless people of different nationalities had settled into these premises peaceably and without any breaking of the law.

"The occupiers invited the participants in the demonstration to join them.

"The residents are calling sympathisers and activists to come to the occupation urgently in order to support this initiative and to deter the police from performing another illegal eviction."

It is feared that efforts by French police to stop the migrants sleeping rough could spur them on to make ever more daring attempts to cross the Channel.

Many individuals have been caught risking their lives trying to cross the Channel in homemade rafts, flimsy boats and even rubber dinghies.

The Channel is home to some of the world's busiest shipping lanes, making the journey to Dover all the more treacherous.
