APPLE is investigating after a woman received a fatal electric shock when she answered her iPhone 5 which was on charge.

Last Thursday, Ma Ailun, a 23-year-old woman from China's western Xinjiang region and a flight attendant with China Southern Airlines, was electrocuted when she took a call on the charging mobile telephone, the official Xinhua news agency quoted police as saying on Sunday.

The technology giant has confirmed it is investigating the accident, but has not revealed whether this was an isolated incident.

A spokesman said: "We are deeply saddened to learn of this tragic incident and offer our condolences to the Ma family. We will fully investigate and cooperate with authorities in this matter."

Ma's sister tweeted on Sina's microblog saying that Ma collapsed and died after using her charging iPhone 5 and urged users to be careful, a message that went viral on the site.

In April, Apple apologised to Chinese consumers and altered iPhone warranty policies in its second-biggest market after its after-sales service suffered more more than two weeks of condemnation by the state-run media.

The iPhone 5 is the UK's most popular smartphone - eclipsing the recently launched Samsung Galaxy S4.

Samsung released their challenger to Apple's dominance in May, put was was placed third in a list of the most popular handsets among UK consumers in that month.

The Apple iPhone 5 held top spot as the nation's favourite smartphone, while the Apple iPhone 4S was ranked as the second most popular mobile.

The smartphone rankings were compiled by uSwitch.com who based its Mobile Tracker table on sales, pre-orders and live searches for handsets.
