Airport seized by Syria rebels
REBELS seized an air defence facility and attacked a military airport in eastern Syria yesterday in a direct hit against President Bashar Assad’s reliance on helicopters and fighter jets to defeat the 17-month uprising.
The attacks in oil-producing Deir al-Zor province follow strikes on military airports in the Aleppo and Idlib areas.
So far 20,000 people have died in the Arab Spring’s bloodiest rebellion.
