High resolution images of Leonardo Da Vinci’s 500-year-old masterpiece, left, have revealed the symbols in the pupils of the mystery woman.

Yesterday, Silvano Vinceti, president of Italy’s National Committee for Cultural Heritage, said: “In the right eye appear to be the letters LV which could stand for his name, while in the left eye it appears are the letters CE. In the arch of the bridge the number 72 can be seen.”

He added: “They are unlikely to have been put there by mistake so we are confident they are a message from Da Vinci.”

Author Dan Brown wrote of secret messages in the Mona Lisa in his 2003 book The Da Vinci Code.
