Plaque hails Holocaust rescue hero
A plaque commemorating a Swedish diplomat who rescued tens of thousands of Hungarian Jews during the Holocaust has been unveiled on a wall of the British Embassy in Budapest.
British Ambassador Greg Dorey said that in November 1944, Raoul Wallenberg rented the third floor of what then was a Hungarian bank and used it as one of many safe houses he set up around Budapest to shelter Jews and carry out his work.
Swedish Ambassador Cecilia Bjorner also attended the ceremony.
Wallenberg was arrested in January 1945 by the Soviet army and his fate has remained a mystery.
The Russians claimed he was executed on July 17, 1947, but never produced a reliable death certificate or his remains.
