Cheeky UK companies this morning employed a host of tricks to get a laugh on the antic-filled day.

Firms had until midday to catch out their most gullible customers, but were you fooled by any of the following pranks?

Leading animal charity Cats Protection announced today they were replacing all the toilets in their centres with litter trays.

The alleged move was in a bid to help staff, volunteers and visitors “better understand the cats in their care”.

“Our facilities were due an upgrade so we felt this was the ideal time to make a change in keeping with our vision of a world where every cat is treated with kindness and an understanding of its needs,” joked facilities manager Bill Ditnow.

“Encouraging our people to use litter trays will help us get in touch with the feelings of cats. It’s also extremely cost-effective though we will, of course, still provide toilet paper and a bucket of clean water for health and safety reasons.”

Meanwhile, Costa Coffee made a hoax-announcment hailing the introduction of Ostrich-shaped pillows in its stores.

The mischievous company promised coffee drinkers a 15-minute nap on the life-size cushions.

Gaining inspiration from firms like Google and Nike – who already provide nap rooms for staff – the coffee pranksters said they were bringing a similar concept to UK high streets with a ‘Costa and a Kip’ service.

And world-famous smoked salmon producer H. Forman & Son decided to expand on their artisan methods by producing a unique perfume.

Forman’s Smoked Salmon & Lemon Zest scent was announced as the new pungent addition to the luxury product range.

The retailer claimed the pongy product would be sold through their Forman & Field online store.

The unique scent was announced as being released in the high street in the next few months.

Lance Forman, owner of Forman, said: “We are delighted to release this unique scent.

“With our background in preparing items for the luxury market, this is a natural addition and a perfect fit for our artisan gift hampers.

“With an abundance of grade one salmon at our disposal, all that we’ve needed to source has been a supply of lemons.”

Last year’s April Fools' Day pranks included reports of the world’s first square egg laid by a chicken.

And in 1980 the BBC claimed that the hands from Big Ben would be sold to the first four bidders and the analogue clock face replaced with a digital display.
