Police said that 18-month-old Lily Groesbeck was found hanging upside in the overturned wreck in the Spanish Fork River, Utah.

She was discovered by a fisherman still strapped in her car seat - the water never reached high enough to touch her.
Her mother Lynn Groesbeck , 25, was found dead in the driver’s seat.

While the overnight temperature had dipped to the low- to mid-30s Fahrenheit, the toddler’s condition has already improved from critical to stable after she was rushed to a Salt Lake City hospital.

Ms Groesbeck had left her parents’ house in Salem about 10pm on Friday and was en route to her Springville home when the crash occurred.

Police are unsure why the car left the road but believe it had hit a cement barrier on the bridge and careered into the river.

Fisherman discovered the car about 12.30pm on Saturday.

Three police officers and four firefighters entered the river to push the car on its side and rescue the girl.

Ms Sanderson said her sister who had lived in the Provo area her entire life was enrolled at Provo College with a goal of becoming a medical assistant.

She said: “She was very compassionate and a very loving person and always willing to bend over backwards for her loved ones.

“Her baby was the love of her life. She was an amazing mother.”
