Escape from the killer whale
BRUSHES with death don’t come much closer than this seal pup’s encounter with a killer whale.
The massive predator chased its prey through the shallows and on to the beach, its terrifying jaws closing just inches from the helpless – and very lucky – little creature.
The amazing sequence was captured by photographer and conservationist Rob Lott, 44.
He travelled to Punta Norte in Patagonia on the Atlantic coast of South America to study the behaviour of a pod of 18 killer whales, or Orcas.
Rob said: “As seal pups grow they become braver and head towards the shallow surf and the Orcas figure this out.
“On this occasion the pup got away, but it made for some spectacular images.”
And as for the killer whale, he must have been left feeling like a fish out of water.
