Britain looks set to bask in temperatures of around 20C next week ahead of the early May bank holiday.

Areas north of Newcastle, particularly the east coast of Scotland will receive the coldest temperatures, with potential for scattered showers across the UK throughout the week.

However, the south-east of England will see the hottest temperatures, with the Met Office saying parts of the country could see the temperature passing the 20C mark.

After a weekend washout, the Met Office says temperatures will begin to climb from Monday, with 13C in northern parts of Britain and 15C for southern.

Tuesday meanwhile will see temperatures reaching the late teens, with 17C forecast for the nation, before a slight drop in the northern regions on Wednesday, where temperatures are set to be around 16C north of Newcastle and 18C south.

The temperature will continue to rise with 17C and 20C forecast on Thursday, before looking like the warm spell will continue into the weekend.

Senior meteorologist at the Met Office Amy Bokota said: “Temperatures have been below average for the last couple of weeks, so certainly by the time we get to Wednesday, and probably into next weekend, temperatures will be warmer.

“It might not be the sort of glorious sort of heatwave that we’re hoping for … but there probably will be some more pleasant and warmer weather for some people as we head towards the end of the week.”

So far this month, the maximum temperature recorded has been 21.8C in Writtle, Essex, on April 13 with a low of minus 6.3C recorded in Shap, Cumbria, on April 26 and a UK-wide average of 8.4C, according to the Met Office.

Grey skies and wet weather meant April may have felt unusually cold despite temperatures being higher than average for the time of year, the organisation said.

The weather heading into the long weekend and next week is set to be "predominantly dry" up north with showers in the south, says the forecast.

A Met Office spokesman said: "During the first weekend, northern parts of the UK are likely to be predominantly dry, while areas of rain or showers, perhaps heavy and thundery, clear erratically from the south to usher in a spell of drier weather here too.

"There is likely to be a fair amount of low cloud in the east at times, with spells of coastal fog, but also temperatures generally above average for the time of year."
