Molly Morgan, 81, was attacked from behind while on her way to a library to do volunteer work.

The robber snatched her shoulder bag so violently that she was hurled to the ground, hitting her head.

Mrs Morgan was taken to Northwick Park Hospital after the attack in Kenton, north-west London, on Thursday. She died at 4am yesterday.

Her killer fled on foot and the haul, part of which was found near the scene of the attack, included a carrier bag, an umbrella from Primark and an electrical lead. Mrs Morgan’s shoulder bag has not been recovered.

Mrs Morgan, who was carrying her purse and keys in her pocket, was able to describe what happened to police.

A murder inquiry has been launched and police are appealing for anyone who was in the area at about 7.30pm on Thursday to contact them.

Detective Chief Inspector Jessica Wadsworth said: “We can’t describe the assailant. We don’t even know if it was a man or a woman.”
