A BRITISH man has died after crashing at high speed while skiing off-piste in the French Alps.

The 59-year-old from Jersey was in the popular resort of Val D’sere.
Rescuers said the man had been skiing “very fast” and crashed on the side of the piste into a dip.
Emergency services received a call at 5.05pm on Thursday.
Medics attended to the man on the mountainside before airlifting him to Grenoble Hospital by helicopter. But he died from a heart attack before he arrived.
He had been skiing in an off-piste section in the Solaise area of Val D’Isere, the most popular resort in the world with British skiers.

A spokesman for the mountain police unit in Modane said: “A 59-year Briton from Jersey died. He had been on the piste but had just left it.
He had a cardiac arrest in the helicopter
"He was very close to the piste when he had an accident. He was skiing very fast. There was a depression and he crashed and suffered many fractures.
"He had a cardiac arrest in the helicopter while he was being transported to Grenoble and was pronounced dead on arrival at hospital.”
The man had been skiing with a friend and had been on holiday on the resort within family.
A police spokesman in Val D’Isere said: “We can confirm the death of a British national. His family were on holiday in the resort.”

Off-piste conditions in the Alps have been poor due to lack of snowfall and heavy wind.
Mountain professionals have warned skiers to take extra precautions because of the thin snow cover.
