Unsuspecting James Campbell, an Oxford medieval history professor, purchased the picture of rooftops in Lowestoft, Suffolk but never put it on his wall.
Before his death he gave it to a female cousin who admitted she never liked it and she put it up for sale.
It has now been identified as the work of British artist Euan Uglow, who died in 2000.

“You could pass this painting in a charity shop for £2 and think ‘they’ll never sell that’.
"But he is a recognised artist and his works make a lot of money.”
