Supermarkets forced to RECALL 23 popular YOGHURT brands as they pose 'health risk'
A RECALL notice has forced supermarket giants to clear their shelves of thousands of yoghurts over fears the products may contain rubber and pose a major health risk.
Yoghurt products are being withdrawn from supermarkets’ shelves after a health scare
The UK's major supermarket chains, ASDA, Co-op, Sainsbury, Tesco and Waitrose, were all affected.
The recall comes amid pieces of rubber being found in some yoghurts, prompting fears more could be lurking on supermarket shelves.
Yeo Valley, established in 1992, admitted a number of its products may be affected, posing a “risk to health”.
The Somerset-based company supplies supermarket chains across the UK with 'own brand' ranges such as ASDA’s Extra Special range and Tesco Finest.
The Food Standards Agency (FSA) issued the urgent recall over the health fears.
They also supply popular The Collective Dairy packs.
In total 23 brands could be compromised.
A spokesman for Yeo Valley said: "We can confirm that a piece of rubber was found in a fruit conserve.
"The supplier had identified the cause and identified all fruit conserves, an ingredient used in yoghurts, that may be affected.
"Whilst the risk is considered to be low, we will be disposing of any potentially affected yoghurts that have not yet been dispatched, as well as recalling the relevant batches of products from those affected retailers.
"We are working with the Food Standards Agency and the supplier in question. We would like to apologise unreservedly to all customers."
The Food Standards Agency (FSA) issued the urgent recall over the health fears.
In online advice to customers, they said: "Yeo Valley is recalling a number of its chilled yoghurt products as they possibly contain pieces of rubber.
“This means the products are a possible risk to health.
"If you have bought any of the above products, do no eat them.
"Instead, follow the advice on the point-of-sale notices."
Notices will be displayed in affected stores throughout the country.
As well as the diary based snack, its peanuts were also recalled as they did not correctly label they contained milk or nuts.
A statement from Lidl said: "Lidl UK is recalling Milbona Fruit Yoghurt, 8 x 125g, Use by Date 18.08.16 only, due to milk not being declared in English on a small number of items.
"Lidl UK is recalling Alesto Honey Peanuts, 200g, Best Before Date 02.2017 only, due to peanuts not being declared in English on a small number of packets."
Yeo Valley has said its product may contain bits of rubber
