MOTORISTS will be able to fight costly parking fines on their mobile phones soon, thanks to a new appeals system.

Some 4.5 million tickets are issued annually but only 20,000 drivers take them to the Traffic Penalty Tribunal, although half of who do, win.
The new online platform, developed by TPT and consumer complaints service Resolver, is designed to make it easier to challenge the tickets.

TPT plans to roll it out to every other local authority by the end of this year.
People who receive a penalty charge notice for parking or bus lane contraventions or fines for the Dartford Crossing and Durham congestion charge will now be able to appeal the fine via smartphone or computer, rather than through paper forms in the post.

They will also be able to upload videos and photographic evidence, and an independent adjudicator will decide cases in days rather than weeks.
Resolver’s James Walker said: “Drivers have a good chance of getting a parking ticket overturned if they take it to the tribunal, so we hope this will encourage more to do it.”
TPT chief adjudicator Caroline Sheppard said: “Getting a parking ticket can be frustrating, but our new portal makes the appeals process quicker, simpler and more transparent.
