Jeremy Clarkson won't face police action over his assault on Top Gear producer Oisin Tymon

The popular presenter was told he wouldn't have his BBC contract renewed last month, after he left Top Gear crew member Oisin Tymon with "swelling and bleeding to his lip" during what the corporation termed a "fracas".

According to reports, the row broke out after Clarkson was unable to order a hot dinner at his hotel following a day of filming.

Following the BBC's action, North Yorkshire Police interviewed witnesses over the incident at Simonstone Hall Hotel in Hawes.

However, the force this morning confirmed they would not be "pursuing this matter any further".

A spokesperson added: "North Yorkshire Police takes a thorough and victim-led approach to all investigations.

"Last week, the person at the centre of the incident, Mr Tymon, said that he did not wish the police to take action on his behalf.

"However, at that point we still needed to speak to some members of the public who were present at the time of the incident, who had been affected by the event, and whose views also needed to be considered.

"Now that all the interviews are complete, we have properly established that there is no need for further police action."

Clarkson, 54, had previously urged people not to blame Tymon, 36, for the incident.

Following the BBC's decision not to keep him on as a host of Top Gear, he said: "All I would like to say is ... I wish people would leave Ois alone because none of this was his fault."

Clarkson's Top Gear co-hosts Richard Hammond, 45, and James May, 52, both appear to decided not to renew their BBC contracts, which ran out at the end of last month.

It brings to an end the trio's long-running presenting stint on the hit motoring show.

However, the stars will soon be reunited as a 'Top Gear Live' arena world tour will still take place, having now been renamed 'Clarkson, Hammond and May Live'.

Thousands of fans around the world had already bought tickets before Clarkson's sacking and the first live show will take place in Belfast on May 22.
