Fire fighters worked through the night to check for casualties

Emergency crews have been working through the night to look for casualties after the roof fell in at the terraced property in Birmingham.

Specialist dog crews searched inside the rubble for casualties, while the ambulance service’s Hazardous Area Response Team was also in attendance.

Images from the scene show the building turned to rubble, with bricks falling onto the road and inside the building. It appears the building was under construction, with a skip full of timber at the front of the property.

There are not believed to have been any casualties and a safety inspection of the building will be carried out by Birmingham council officers.

The collapse took place at about 11.30pm last night on Walford Road in the Sparkbrook area of Birmingham.

The cause of the collapse is unknown although Birmingham’s police helicopter said it had identified a transformer as a heat source which may have lead to the collapse.

Fire crews said they had handed the incident over to police in the early hours of this morning.

A spokesman for the force said the incident was not a police matter but Walford Road remains closed and access may also be restricted on surrounding streets, Osborn Road, Medlicott Road and Holder Road.
